Why always female?
When my mollies have babies and they are old enough to find out what sex they are...why is it that they are always female?
Iv only ever had 1 baby male but when he was in the nursery tank he was a non surviver...all the females have survived!
Does anyone know why im just getting female babies and no males??? Its quite frustrating!
Or is it just a fact of life

I would love at least 1 or 2 males ( black adult male died today) as all the babies when they are old enough are being taken to the lfs. Got too many now, lol!

What temp is your tank? below 25C you tend to get more females and above you get more males. i think its that way round but it could be the other. TBH i think its better to get more males than females because the more females to males the better.

Its down to 24C but its probably pointless as they are all dying!

Re: Why always female?
Uhm, they all start out as female I think (don't quote me on this). But then some will turn to males when the amount of females is settled (something like that) so just wait until they're a little bigger :D

Thanks Nyu, im not sure myself as only ever had the one male that died before he got to 8 weeks old. All the female babies have been a lot stronger. Although saying that whatever has hit the tank now most mollies have died now.

Really? I've never found that. Interesting O: I think alot of them tend to change at around the 3month+ mark. (again, don't quote me on this, this is really just personal experience)

Re: Why always female?
If I'm correct the ONLY fish to change sex is the clown fish - Mollies are born male and female (I think) its just not til theyre bigger they show what they are
It could be like people - the male sperm decides if the baby is male or female (egg = X spem = X/Y) xx = girl xy = boy
Maybe thats the same for mollies

Re: Why always female?
I agree with haych they all look like females with the fins and no colour until they are about 3 monthsbut right from the start they are male or female but they just dont show it until they are big enough. Like haych said the only fish i know of that can change sex is clown fish some people say sword tails can but they could just be late developer because from what ive heard none have given birth and then changed to male.

I didn't mean that they change (I used the wrong wording, sorry!) But yeah, what I meant was what you guys have said.

Re: Why always female?
guppies seem to be late developers, too. Most of my males start out looking like females for quite some time. And I usually end up with more females in a drop than males, anyways.
