OMG I'm so so sorry Lexi Sad This is horrible. With that many girls I am surprised this happened. Do you have plants and stuff for them to hide in?

Oh noooo that's awful Lexi.....I thought things had settled quite nicely, but as is always the case....they wait until you least expect it.

Only thing I can think is that you've got yourself a male or two!!!!!

Um yes after that nasty algae eater eating half Trevs fish I wouldn't trust him. You don't think the catfish could have done this?

Catfish are sneaky things, we had one that took out most of the fish as well.

This unfortunately is the bad side of keeping sororities. It is not uncommon for a tank to be fine for days, weeks, or even months, and then one girl has a bad day and goes on a killing spree. Sometimes it can be linked to them reaching maturity, I hear. I would remove any weak or injured girls from the tank, since it would be the culprit's instinct to pick off the weakest fish. I wouldn't point the finger at the catfish, really. It's a risk you take when you put aggressive fish together. Although it's true that the aquarium industry has committed the terrible sin of marketing Chinese Algae Eaters as "Algae Eater" rather than Chinese Monsters That Will Latch On To Fish And Eat Their Slime Coats, among other things.. Are CAE really that common over there?

Yes they are everywhere in every fish shop I know except Modaz's They don't even warn people about them. One shop has 4 tanks full of them and offers like 3 for £5. When we bought ours we were newbies and had no idea just took their advice. Big mistake.

Maybe you do have a rogue male in there. I would defientely try to seperate any injured though.

None seem to be injured just a few nipped fins but after looking they all have nipped fins.

I cannot catch a single one of them as been trying to catch the girls with white mouths to get a good picture! No chance on this earth!! I've got as good a pic as I could of them but they really aint the best!!

have a pic of the catfish on my phone but dont know if I can upload that!! sunny

That's terrible. I have no idea why they're even imported. I don't see them as often around here, but giving out common plecos to people is honestly just as bad. They get so big and can be aggressive and need a lot of filtration, and the average aquarium just is not ideal at all.. More of a reason to remember that every time you set up an aquarium you're trying to mimic nature, which is an utter impossibility. The industry doesn't care if we succeed or not, it's on us to research before we buy. But even that, as this case shows, is not always sufficient either, sometimes it just doesn't turn out the way we plan it. =(
