6 gallon tankmates
Hi folks.
Ok, so the 6 gallon has been up and running for a week. I'll make sure its cycled before I add any fish in, by adding in some "media" from the other tank to the filter.
In another thread I had been talking about tank mates for my betta who resides in my 9 gallon. This is a similar thread because I'm asking what tankmates will do well with a betta in a 6 gallon? Should I add them in together or over a period of weeks.
I don't know if the size of this tank changes what I can and can't add.
Thanks for your advice in advance.

Hi
Firstly it very much depends on the Betta. 6 gallons isn't much room to play with, but you could get away with some shrimp or micro Rasbora possibly.

Should I just leave it at no tank mates for this one even? I'm not opposed to that.

AND, I got 5 rummy nose tetras last night. Today I have 3. 1 got into the filter somehow and the other was just floating this morning. On a plus, the other 3 look very content.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
Don't be too disheartened by losing the rummynose hun, not your fault at all. I've had a couple get behind my filter and I was so upset! I was told that they aren't very healthy fish as they are bred heavily and don't travel well... not sure how true that is
I realllllllly like shrimp they can make great tankmates if you want something in the 6gal. Cherry shrimp and the stripy bumblebee ones (is that their name?! lol) are prettyful

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
I kept an eye out for shrimp today (I think you mentioned it in my other thread) and neither LPS I go to has them. I suppose its something I can continue to keep an eye out for, no rush. They're very cute, you're right!
As for the rummy nose in the filter. No idea how he got there. Its a small filter for small animals but he found a way in. I'll maybe pick up 1 or 2 more this weekend. to add to those 3.

I think I'll just get the betta to begin with and see what kind of a personality he is first. After that I can better decide if tankmates are even an option!

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
I was just going to swap a filter sponge (there are 2 in each filter) tomorrow. The filter in each tank is the exact same.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
See....its that wee word "media" again. LOL There is no way for the fish to get into the filter other than through a wee hole at the back. There are meant to be 3 suckers holding the filter on but the bottom 1 broke so its stuck with 2, which is more than enough! I just think that's the only way he could have gotten in, he was a tiddler compared to the others.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
media is the sponge stuff in the fillter and the intake are the little holes you are saying about. what i mean is cxan you get another bit of the sponge and cover the little holes that suck in water with it so the fish can get into it.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
The corys are absolutely fantastic. Hardy wee buggers, aren't they? You were right kizno, they look so much cuter when there is more than 1! I love how they'll be busying themselves along the bottom of the tank and then all of a sudden they'll take a "fit" and wiggle up to the top, then to the bottom, as fast as possible. Once one does it the other 2 seem to follow suit. I never thought I'd say it but between them and the rummynose, I'd chose the cory's all day long.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
yh they are cool to watch. you should try and get pygmy corys in the 6 if you can there alot more active and swim in the middle of the tank more. all corys look really nice in big groups my 9 all shaol together and do the same as yours once one darts to the surface the others follow.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
Oh I've kept an eye out for the pygmy cory's since you first mentioned them. I thought instead of buy 2 more cory's to add to the other 3, I could get 3 pygmy cory's. I just have never seen them in either pet store I go to.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
its best to keep groups of atleast 4 of each type up pygmy corys are so small they might gett over compeated for food i think it would be best to get 6 to go in the 6g if you can so theres no other bottom dwellers to out compete them for food.

Well, I've decided to only pick up a betta tomorrow (if there is any!) but I'll continue to keep an eye out for the pygmy cory's until something else comes along.

Re: 6 gallon tankmates
I'm home with a red VT betta. He looked a bit lethargic in the pet shop. An employee was removing a few fish from the tank as I walked in. I know I probably shouldn't have taken him and that there will no doubt be problems (again) but I just couldn't leave him.
I done the whole floating the bag for 15, adding in some tank water for 15 etc. and now he's happily swimming about. He looks perkier already. I hope he lasts. I'm kinda in love already.
