SAP tankmates?

SAP tankmates?
In the new year I intend to try & upgrade my puffers to a bigger tank. Don't know when, its just something that is on the "to do" list. I often read different bits and pieces about them. The wee dudes just fascinate me. Recently I read about potential tankmates for them. The arguments vary from "don't" to "suck it and see" to "bottom dwellers are ok". I know SAP's are the most placid of the puffer species but they're still not placid to the extent that we describe community fish. I miss have bottom dwellers so I guess that's what got me thinking if its possible or not.

Fast moving fish are best but even then its still risky because they can be quite nippy. I wouldnt go for bottom dwellers because most are quite slow and would get torn apart even plecs armour wouldnt help much against puffers teeth. Medium sized barbs, tetra and rasbora will be the safest choose but even then it could still go wrong.

Re: SAP tankmates?
So I'm down to 2 puffers now. All were feeding well and looked happy yesterday morning. I came home that evening, looked in and they were still all happy. Went out to get some groceries and came home to 1 dead. I have no idea what was wrong. Tested the water and its ok. The dead fish itself looks grand. Lou' suggested treating the tank with some Kusuri wormer just in case, so I'll be picking that up tomorrow.

Thats such a shame after having them for this long aswell.
Keep an eye on the remaining two because quite often one will bully the other.

Re: SAP tankmates?
So sorry to hear that poor little guys. I only have one dwarf puff left - lost two to a horrible filter intake accident and one just disappeared, the last one is doing well but I'm getting him some friends as soon as possible.
What about rainbowfish with a SAP if the temperatures are compatible? Or some sort of medium-sized barbs?
