I have this one for my large 24gal and the smaller one for Indi's tank, i use the smaller one because it runs the water slower and gives me more time to suck up loads of plant leaves and whatever else is on the bottom! I would never use the smaller one on the 24gal though, i would be there for ages!

Re: Gravel Cleaners
just put the big end in the tank and hold the tube over the side of the tank then suck on the end till the water comes over the edge then quickly put the other end in a bucket

Re: Gravel Cleaners
Only if you get a battery powered. I can't recommend one cos we do it the old fashioned way and to be honest you get used to swallowing tank water after a while :lol!:

Re: Gravel Cleaners
It depends how big your tank is, if its big then you can shake the end thats in the tank up and down, and make sure the bucket is below the tank, otherwise it will not syphon.

Re: Gravel Cleaners
The smallest siphon style ones can be started by moving them up and down in the water with an *ahem* vigorous wrist action even in smaller tanks. We have one we use for all our boys.
For using an airline tube for cleaning babies etc I have a 60ml syringe (no needle of course lol) which I use to get it going so I don't have to swallow tank water. I've seen what fish do in it

Re: Gravel Cleaners
I got a new one from a car boot sale that has a sort of blue concertina bit in the middle so instead of sucking you just squeeze it and it draws the water up, much better than drinking half of the pooy water!

Re: Gravel Cleaners
If you keep an eye out you can get a petrol syphon which has a long straight tube the a hand pump then a consertina length of tube, my sons got one for petrol and won't let me have it for the tanks, i think it cost a pound???
Otherwise with the old stylee ones just put the big end in the tank and keep pushing the tube into the water until theres more in than out, put your finger over the end and lower it into the bucket before taking your finger off the end, it normally works, may take a couple of attempts to master it!

Re: Gravel Cleaners
apparently if you fill the manual siphon with water and no air gaps keeping thumb over end then put tube back in tank it will work when thumb is released, no sucking or frantic pumping lol......yet to try it, mine is battery powered but I just got a manual one, wil try it.
