betta cannibal!

My betta anabantoides ate my ct female today :shock:
He's been in my girly tank for over a year without a prob til today.
Suposedly a docile mouth brooder but turned killer!!
all fed this morning and fine... this aftie... he was swimming with summat sticking out of mouth!
It was the tail end of my crown! I dunno how he managed to fit her in! and he looks like he's about to burst... belly hugely distended.. reminds me of a snake!
He's now been renamed jaws!!!
She was an ebay midget but supposedly 9 months old now, poor lil mite

I couldn't believe it when i saw it! still can't get my head around how he managed to open his mouth that wide!!!

Sorry that this happened but this just highlights the dangers of mixed sex housing regardless of temperment. Hopefully next time you wont do this.

he's a bubble nesting wild type betta, doesn't flare or act anything like a splenden... a distant relation altogether.
was always in a community tank with his matching female til she managed to jump a gap then always in with splenden type females without a prob for the past year.
That ct girl was a dwarf for her age but didn't expect him to think of her as lunch!
No nipping or any splenden type behaviour ever from him... he's a dif fish altogether from the bettas everyone here knows
I've a few wilds and yes mahachai/maragadina and imbellis yes i'd expect violence if i tried to mix them with splendens but i'd also not expect them to actually eat another one whole.

ive seen my adult female bettas, attack much amaller female bettas when i tryed to add the babies to the new sority tank at 3 months,, my other females were much bigger so i think the sight of somnethin very small just sparks some idot gene that says eat live swimming food.... newborn fry eat walter worms more ten crushed betta starter soo... maybe he just though she was food?
