Dwarf Puffers Empty Dwarf Puffers

Post by Irish_Lass Fri 24 Sep 2010 - 11:40

So my 9g hex is finally empty & I'm retiring it. Bloody eyesore that they are. I'm going to pick up a 15g tank next weekend & this will become my wee Dwarf Puffer tank. :D

Today I've been trying to source some LFS that sell DPs & its proving ridiculously harder than I thought. One place no longer has them on their stock list so they can't order them. Another place never stocks them & their suppliers can't get them for them anyway. Final place I tried said he could order them in but I would have to collect them on the same day because he has no tank for them. He said that a customer had complained recently about an employee mis-selling them to a customer. The penny dropped, that person was me. Embarassed The customer was my mam. I don't know if you remember but they told her that the DPs would do ok in the tank with her current fish. The 2 wee buggers anihilated her tank overnight. I wasn't home that weekend & wasn't speaking to her prior to it all so I couldn't even tell her to not buy them.

Now to think of an undercover name if they get them in for me. Wink

Ooh how exciting - can't wait to see them! I love the little things.

Did the DPs or anything from your mum's tank survive?

The DPs had to be rehomed with a family friend that is puffer obsessed anyway so a happy ending there. The rest of the fish had their fins nipped, shredded etc. but they all survived. Their fins are growing back slowly but surely & they're only too happy to see the back of the DPs I'm sure. Wink

I just love puffers. Happen when the last of my tropicals have gone I could put 2 small ones in there. Its only a small tropical but it needs cleaning out!

The manager of this particular LPS is going to call me on Monday afternoon and let me know if he can get me the DPs or not. If he can't then I'm going to have to get them shipped I guess. Does anyone know of any reputable breeders etc.?

I adore puffers :D they're so cute! I'd try your local MA, they often have them in, and also have them on their freshwater stocklist on their site with some good info.

I'm sorry you're hvaing such trouble getting them in stock over there Sad

Have you tried ordering via Wildwoods? Do they deliver to Ireland? Might be worth checking, they have a HUGE range of puffers usually available Smile

I haven't looked into it until today Lou. I thought it would be easier to get them than this to be honest. tantrum

Hopefully the lad in one of my LPS will have good news for me on Monday afternoon. Fingers crossed!

I'll keep Wildwoods in mind though, ta. x

Smile I do hope so, they're lovely fish. Be wary about feeding though, I've heard it can be quite difficult in captivity.

I haven't seen a DP yet that wouldn't rip your arm off for a snail or some bloodworms. Wink

Hope they can get them in for you thumbup . Wildwoods are normally pretty good but ive seen a few people recently complain that they have been sent ill fish and wildwoods wont do anything because they where still alive when they arrived.

I've been trying to think of how I want my puffer tank to look but I'm really undecided. Don't mention wood! Smile I know in the beginning it will look pretty basic because I'll just be using the silk plants and moss balls from the 6g tank. It will be a work in progress. Smile

They do need lots of plants and caves to give them lots of room to get away from each other. How many do you think you will get?

I was planning on the 1 male & 3 females like you suggested, but it really just depends on what the fella can get me on Monday, if he can get me them at all.

Because it not as good as England haha. They have only just started getting them and one of them was only because i mentioned them. If you can get some the other thing you could do is have a go at breeding because if there hard to get around you they might be easy to sell.

Nah, I'm not a breeder, don't think I could do it. Smile

You can get almost anything else you want except puffers and other tail types of bettas.

Just emailed a pet shop down South to see if they stock DPs. They're almost a 2 hour drive but if they had them at least they're another option for me.

Fair enough.

That always seems to be the way. About half the stocking i want for my tank i cant get around here.

If you can get down there IMO that would be a better and safer choose than getting them posted from wildwoods.
