Giants!? Empty Giants!?

Post by cheekysbabe Thu 22 Jul 2010 - 12:51

Hey everyone.

Sorry I havent been on it a long time. I have been changing jobs and buying horses and riding and just wanting to sleep at the end of the day and the net was the last thing I could think of doing.

Ive just brought a giant shortfin betta. He is ment to be 6cm ATM but he looks a little bigger, And grow to 12cm!! I was just woundering what you all know about them.

I will post pics soon. But just to let you know he has this big white head, blue/green body with a bit of red and black. He is still colouring up. He seems to be a easy going kind of betta as he was next to two other giants and didnt ready care. Also he is in with a catfish of some kind (forget what it is) and he just swims right by him not a care in the world. Dont you just love them!

Thanks Jade. Very Happy

Hi
Never had Giants, but I do know that they require more food than normal sized bettas. Its also important to use good quality high protein foods for their development.

I think Kings aren't as big as giants. They're more along the lines of half-giants. I'm not entirely sure though. I just remember being told that by a fellow United-Statian.

Looking good hun

they are in general more laid back but eat loads more

they can suffer from constpation probs so better to feed then often

If you intend to brred him don't even try it til you know he's 7-9 months old, they are as lazy with spawning as the are the rest of the time.

When they get aggressive though they are monsters.. heavy weights so it's not jaws that you need to worry about but ramming :S

Pretty boy btw!

Thanks everyone.

7-9months... Crap. I was thinking hurny and get him in condition!!! As i would love to breed him. But i'm not sure. I was thinking about breeding him to a CT. But not sure. Are you able to breed them to a smaller betta? Or is it really hard.

All the help you can give me would be great. Thanks again.

P.S will post more pics later and I will try my best to measure him up!

If he's bulding bubblenests you could try him sooner but on average they spawn easiest at around 9-12 months old.

You can breed with a normal female but do need to watch carefully, all comes down to the aggression. A giant male can kill a female with one blow (happened to one of my giant females :S) You will get some normal sized and some half giants in the spawn.

Aquabid would be the main place to find them but they don't ship very well so order at your own risk. Yes you can keep one in a ten gallon tank. Mainanence is pretty much the same but oviously they eat more so more frequent water changes are required and as previously mentioned, watch out for constipation problems, a few daily smaller feeds is better than one big one.

I worked out he is about 7cm long and 4cm high! I'm glad giants breed later. Gives me more time to work things out. If my mum and dad bring me back a dragin female I'll try her with one of my dragons. I'll just have to get one second tank set up etc. Yay!! I love this stuff.

No such thing as a 'king' betta in the splenden world, just a fancy name a US chainstore has given. They are just giants the actual kings are mouth brooding wild bettas, large mouths if I remember correctly.

Nice betta btw x
