How old is he? Is it the same person he is growling out or more than one?

Re: Border Lakeland
Are they doing anything in particular at the time he growls at them or maybe wearing a certain item of clothing that sets him off?

Re: Border Lakeland
Usually that happens with an over protective dog who thinks he's more dominant than you i.e. he has to protect you, you are not protecting him so he grows to defend you, his pack
Little things like not letting him eat until you say so, making him wait so you always go through doors first will help, and if he looks to you you should stare back at him until he breaks eye contact and looks away. If these are things you already do let me know
My brother trains gun dogs and uses pack mentality to train them I'll ask him but otherwise it seems as though your dog is being protective and needs to be put back in his place - below you

Re: Border Lakeland
Plus at the age of 3 now, he'll be starting to become more assertive and dominant. We have 2 entire male Border Terriers and you really do have to lay down the ground rules quite early.

Re: Border Lakeland
well if he's protective of your dad you will both have to watch out for these little things, they might seem small and you may think your consistently doing them but as Netty said when dogs reach this age you really need to keep an eye on them.
He shouldnt be protective of anyone because the dominant male protects the pack, if he is being protective he clearly thinks he's dominant.
Good luck!

Re: Border Lakeland
You'll need to nip it in the bud as soon as possible. He has to learn that it's not acceptable behaviour. You could use a water spray on jet to squirt at him or a bottle filled with stones that you shake very quickly at him as soon as he growls. Don't speak to him initially when you do it as he will interpret this as the pack joining in with him.

Another question. Who normally feeds and walks him?

Re: Border Lakeland
Can your Mum give him quick walks too. Then when it's feeding time make him sit and wait with his food in front of him until your Mum tells him ok. It might take a while but it does work. My youngest border was quite food aggressive as a pup so he always has to wait nicely for his before we tell him ok. Everything you do with him, has to be done consistently every single time.

Re: Border Lakeland
No probs......hope he starts behaving himself. The thing with borders and lakeland is that they can be extremely stubborn and have a very strong work instinct so you have to be really firm with them but also reward them when they are doing what you want.
