Bubble nest
Ive added floating plants and a cup, and still no bubble nest and i dont no why. Is he unhappy with bloodworm twice a day, or is it because he is red . When ever i have had a red male betta they have always been lazy. Any ideas temp 29c.

Re: Bubble nest
No its not because he's red. Infact typically red males are more aggressive, blood worm twice a day however is way to much bloodworm, its very fatty and should be fed as a treat once a week twice a week max really. Otherwise he runs the risk of becoming constipated.
If his tank is heated and his water stats are fine he might just not be the bubbling type, some betta males never bubble until breeding time (My Zen doesnt bubble at all) other betta's make huge nests!

Re: Bubble nest
Oh also Storm, if you have a fairly fast filter flow it will destroy bubbles or he might not bother - knowing his nest will not stick

Re: Bubble nest
I know you said you had the water tested, was that at your lfs? If so, make them write down the results for you. Better still, get a test kit and then you know for sure:)

Re: Bubble nest
I have found that my higher ph makes bubblenests not last as long. when I breed I use a ial and that helps a bunch.

A tad high could mean anything, thats why you need to get them to write it down. Without the actual results its impossible to gauge anything:)

Re: Bubble nest
Is there really a problem with him not making nests?? If I remember rightly he is a VT so you dont really want to breed him adn as long as he is healthy and active the bubbles nests mean nothing! being red would have nothing to do with him not building a nest however he may be feeling abit fat and sluggish from all the bloodworms!!

There are already 2 many VT's sitting in nasty little tanks in LFS there is no point breeding any more as you wouldn't be able to sell them people aren't going to pay shipping for a VT they can get at there LFS and if you do sell them it would be 2 an LFS where they would just sit in nasty little tanks!!! so why breed a VT! irresponsible IMHO!

Re: Bubble nest
Well come on now, I think you can breed VT's as long as they are unusual enough, there is a great demand for bright orange VT's , a fair demand for the Dalmatian type and I sold a few dragon VT's with not too much of a problem.
They key is breed something unusual or something thats in demand, Lexi is right the basic colours that are found at the LFS are usually - in my experience - given away to the store for free with their order so you have no chance selling them to a LFS for more than 20p a head and you cannot shift them BUT unusual VT's can be in demand, its simply your basic VT with basic colours (pink, red, blue, green) that isnt.
As with ANY tail type you must think of the end first, think of who your selling to and then breed the fish that matches what they want.

I was under the impression you wanted to from one of your previous threads!! I'm only looking out for the welfare of future/present fish, I dont personally any VT's other than unusual specimens as Tilly mentioned should EVER be bred as the are ten a penny!!
(dont want to offend anyone its just my opinion!)

Re: Bubble nest
I like some of them too Storm but must agree with Lexi, if you ever did want to breed bettas, VT 's would prove extremely difficult even to give away

Thats ok as long as they dont breed again because if the babies dont get eaten you will be overrun with VTs! :lol!:

Re: Bubble nest
Poor old VT's always get a hard time and bad press,,
They deserve as much credit as any other tail type,,
I think the IBC are partly responsible for the way they are viewed,,
The IBC are working on a new show standard for VT's,
Breeders are still working show quality lines
Love them or hate them !
There not a thing of the past just yet,,
Which I think is a good thing,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Re: Bubble nest
I think VTs are great too but at the moment as has been said, there is no market for selling them because people aren't going to pay postage for a fish they can pick up in their lfs for £3 or £4.
Unless of course they are a completely different and unusual colour type and to get this would take quite a few spawns to get the desired result and in the meantime what happens to all the babies you raise to get to that point!!
We have been lucky enough to have had 3 beautiful VTs in the past who had stunning colours
