Hello Storm, you can use Indian almond leaf, although it turns the water tea coloured it is pro biotic and promotes bubble nesting, bubble nests stay together better as a result of the attributes of the leaf, if you dont want to have tea coloured water you could try a floating plant variety - You can buy Indian almond leaf from the aqua range on ebay if this is your preference thumbup

Floating Amazon Frogbit is very good if you want a more natural look. We've used bubblewrap with success in the past too.

It's really very unlikely you'll have any success breeding in a community tank. It'll be near impossible to raise any fry in with other fish and the parents.

Why don't you set yourself up a spawning tank. There are so many things that could go disasterously wrong in a community tank and it would be far less stressful on the parents.

Just to pick up on something Netty said about stress. Many people, including us, have had deaths following breeding. The females are put under great stress and even in the best of circumstances can become ill following spawning. We have also had a male suddenly die from what we can only presume was organ failure.

These losses were even after we took special care of them both before and after spawning. Not only will your bettas stress be heightened, but the other fish will become stressed too, which may lead to outbreaks of illness or infection.

Dividing the tank would be better, but you still wont be able to drop the water level to around 5/6 inches.

Dividing is not ideal Storm. you need to have a separate tank to breed them in, really Netty and Bronze are trying to tell you in the nicest way possible that really this isnt something you should do unless you have a nice big tank to breed them in and spare tanks to house the mother and father in afterwards. No one on here has the right to stop you doing it or tell you you cant but to be honest it wouldnt be fair on your bettas or your community fish and you would be better off getting separate tanks

if you want help setting up spawning tanks etc people on here will be more than happy to advise thumbup

The basic spawning tank set-up has -
No substrate - If you have substrate the eggs will fall from the nest and the male will not be able to find them.
Water level - The water level needs only be 5 or 6 inches. This helps the male as he doesn't have to swim down so far to collect the eggs.
Temperature - For spawning needs to be up at 30 degrees. Other fish species are not so tollerant of high temps.

Also, if you leave the female/s with the male if they do spawn, he will hunt them down. Moving the female/s straight into the community after spawning is going to be very stressful, as is moving the male away from any fry. The male will almost definately get highly territorial and you will end up with major problems.
