Problem Snakes Empty Problem Snakes

Post by Wilsonnw8 Sun 25 Apr 2010 - 18:36

Ok I love snakes and seeing this by my pond was exciting ... until I noticed I was missing a fish, I am thinking I may have to sell my fish (my koi) as a consequence of this beautiful chap...and his rather large girlfriend 2 grass snakes = no japanese koi

Gorgeous lad but shame that you'll have to get rid of your Koi because of him. Is there a possibility that he was just moving through?

So you'll be having babies?!?! I want photos of that!

I assume netting is something that wouldn't deter them? Its probably a stupid question. Sorry. Smile

We don't have the problem of snakes in Ireland. Wink

netting the snakes? no most likely thing is that they will just come back and they are a protected species so I cant really move a breeding pair

What size were the Koi? A snake can eat prey approx one and a half times the width of its body. So if the snake is an inch and a half wide, it could easily take a fish of two and a half inches wide. A grass snakes main diet is frogs, toads and birds. Will take small fish if their main prey is scarce.

well thats the male snake the female is a lot bigger she must double his girth , the smaller koi are about 6 inches long the largest is pushing 20 I doubt they will take the large koi but the smaller one's im a bit dubious as they have cleaned us out of toads

Ive just moved the two smaller koi into a 6ft tank I had, all the larger koi are fine as they are too big to be eaten but the smaller dudes had to be removed they seem to be ok though just a bit moody

still 25" is still big. you should be able to find a landing net for that easy you can get them over 4 foot long for catfis. i caught that one at this lake someone dumped a a few in there and the owned didnt relise untill they got big and spawned and he never bothered to take them out because they have done no harm so i catch them sometimes when fishing.
