Grrr green water.... Help!!
Those of you in the UK may have noticed the glorious weather we have been having of late. Well it's wreaking merry hell on my male guppy tank! At certain times in these long summer days it does get a little sun (I can't move it so I keep the blinds shut at these times) but still the water is looking like pea soup. So I'm going to try feeding everyone up for a couple of days and then a total blackout to see if this shifts it. Anyone tried this before? Does it work? And how long should I do it for? Ta in advance!

Re: Grrr green water.... Help!!
Hi Sweetie
We had this in our community tank last year. We done a 75% waterchange and then blacked out the tank for 3 days then another water change. We also got advised to have more live plants and so far touch wood it hasn't come back. But if you have live plants in there atm I'm not sure how they would survive in a blackout.
Hope this helps a little and hopefully the more knowledgeable people will wake up soon :lol!:

You can buy little filter bags I cant remember what they are called but i had the exact same problem and used a filter bag specially made for "clearer water" this worked a treat, I think they contain some carbon. I also bought some API acu-clear and treated with this - and I put the blind down, its still a touch green but nothing like what it was!

We have the same problem although the water doesn't go green, we get alot of algae growth. We've tried treating the water, using RO water, keeping lights off for longer but it still seems to keep growing. We put blinds up now too in the lounge and keep them down virtually all the time especially in the summer. We end up stripping each tank down once a month to give them thorough cleans and within a week or two it starts growing again
It really is a nightmare to control. I've not heard of those bags before....so will check out the lfs to see if they have any. Anything is worth a try.

My tank is just new, although it went through the weekly cycle. But when i got the fish it looked really cloudy and horrible. So i dont a 75% water change, and left the tank in the dark and only turned light on for feeding. 2 days later is it very clear. :D

Fab thanks all! :D The only live plants in there are 2 moss balls which are pretty much indestructable (for all the shrimp keep trying...) so hopefully they will survive. We normally have algae grow on the glass in this tank but we keep it at bay with our algae-scrapy-magnet-thingy. I'l do a big water change and black it out this eve. I'm a bit nervous about trying anything chemically as I don't really like adding chemicals to my tanks. I was nervous enough about adding a bag of coral sand to raise the ph! (it was down to 6 thanks to some bog wood which I have removed and I want it higher so the cherry shrimp with have babies :D )
