is it a barb, neon or what?
got a free tank today full of fish ( many fish! )
but not sure what this is... there's four of them altogether, all identical, barb shaped but i really don't know what they are... they do squabble amongst themselves like barbs do
any help is a big help!

thanks hun
might need some more help in the next week or too while i work out what needs split and how many tanks i need to split the fish over lol
I have 4 big tanks that i can possibly spread the fish through but half to work around the bettas... I know i could prob manage a few guppies n the larger barrack tanks but how many do i need to work.. 1 male.. 3 females?
forgive my ignorance, you know i stick to bettas mainly
well overstocked and i doubt all are compatible and yes checking search pics thats def what they are

Re: what is this fish?
Thats fine. What fish do you need to split? what are the other tanks stocking? WST can be a bit nippy sometimes so shouldnt be kept with guppies, bettas ect they also do best in bigger group just to keep aggression spread out.

Re: what is this fish?
lol.. there's 4 of the white tetras, many guppies, a battered mollie ( will get it netted in morining and already dosing with myaxazin) that i think is being ate alive, a gourami, a pleco thats too big already for the tank, neon tetras, rasboras maybe and def two loach/algae eater things
other tanks are preferred to be kept mainly for bettas/fry grow out etc. but biggest tanks could handle the algae types and plec but guppies and tetras etc. I need to work out, guppies can do barracks to thin them back if need be
I'm working out what is there at min.. only got the tank at teatime but i know there's 3 times the amount of fish there should be
big tanks i have.... 2 x 35ltr biubes, one huge cube thats 15" deep but holds 90+ ltrs, the 60ltr tank they came in, a 3 ft 120ltr and a 2 ft 80ish ltr but ideally most of these hold bettas but i can rearrange

I just counted 35 visible fish 5 mins ago but this pic they were only back into tank after move

Re: what is this fish?
Looking at the picture i can see guppies, white skirt tetra, neon tetra, gold white clouded mountain minnows, scissor tail rasbora and neon tetra. All of which shouldnt be to much of a problem together but all need to be in groups apart from the guppies and there is a chance the gold WCMM and white skirt tetra could nip the guppies. If it was me i would pic 2-3 shoals and up them to 5 each then have on centre piece fish like and Apistogramma or ram and maybe a bulldog plec or shoal of corys for the bottom.

Re: what is this fish?
Yeah they look like the gold strain which are a bit rarer. Although they do best at slightly lower temps than most tropical fish about 22c is perfect.
Yeah go for it
Yeah go for it

Re: what is this fish?
so far i've narrowed down types to..
the common plec (being moved to an almost unihabited 90ltr as soone as i know disease free, then I'll work out what to do with him from there)
2 algae eaters.. will load pic in a bit dunno if siamese, chinese or what
1 dwarf gourami
4 white skirt teras
Many guppies ( lots of babies hence so many)
4- 6 neons (none full adult size)
sick molly (who i think is just being ate alive by the guppies, now in breeding trap as can't move any fish until quarantining is done)
rummy nose tetras.. 3-4 I think
2 similar looking fish to the algae pair but with normal mouths
and the wmm you say you spot, got a pic? I must have thought them as part of the guppy lot!
It's now ten species! :S
Def thing as well as spreading a few around other tanks I need to shift a few on... scared to count how many actual fish are in there!

algae eater sucker mouth ones.. the stripe fades to black dots on the tail
Will get better pics tomz or monday as tank was still settling.
The other two..
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
similar colouring to the algae eaters but less vibrant and normal mouths. Always together and seem really peaceful.

(can you see the gold coloured fish in the pic you posted there in the middle of the tank a few inches under the surface the ones with red tails. From the pic the look lik WCMM but its hard to tell from that distance)

The 1st one looks like a chinese algae eater and the 2nd 2 are defiantly scissor tail rasbora.

Re: what is this fish?
so the small bright orange ones are wmm?
I thought siamese and chinese algae eaters both have sucker mouths?
I ask because even on net there's so much conflict due to pet store selling and everywhere seems to conflict with everywhere else.
I'll get better pics of those two pairs. and see if I can catch some of the wmm to work ot the diff from the younger guppy fry lol
LLooks like I really have to shift some of these fish on.. even just splitiing through my other tnks isn't going to be ideal
wwm.. are they not more suited to cold water? would they survive in a goldfish pond?

Re: what is this fish?
They look like wcmm from the pic but its hard to tell without a close up. Do they have a white line down the length of their body?
Yeah your right they do both have suckermouths i was getting confussed between something else. And looking at the pic again i would say you have got lucky and have a Siamese algae eater.
The 2 in the 2nd pic are definatly scissor tail rasbora.
You might want to think about rehoming the plec as soon as possible because the bigger they get the harder they are to find homes for.
WCMM are sub tropical so like temps 16-22 so i think a bond would be to cold for them plus goldfish are likely to eat them.

Re: what is this fish?
Sounds good.
Apart from the WCMM and the plec none of the fish should be a problem. The only thing is apart from the Siamese algae eater, guppies and molly all the other fish need to be in shoals.
So far it looks like yo have
Common plec
Siamese algae eaters
Guppies
Molly
Neon tetra
scissor tail
Rummynose tetra
White skirt tetra
WCMM
So i would say that must be them all or pretty much all IDed.
