2 males V male + female in a divided tank?

I'm hoping to stop my male betta, Triton, tail biting from boredom as I'm out most of the day. I'm planning to buy a 10 gallon tank and divide it.
I'm guessing a female would provide better entertainment for him than a male?

Yeah, female would get him happy and excited while another male would trigger the fight in him and stress him out and make him flare strongly too much. He'll flare with a female too but in the good way, lol.

From my experience I've found all my issues with tail biting seemed to stem from the male being in view of another & basically getting to stressed and biting. Therefore have scrapped the idea of divided tanks, I find they do alot better in their own environment.
However with one of my males who was tail-biting, he did stop when I placed a female in view, he was too busy to bite building a nest. I found it's a good method.

There are no other fish in my room, and it's pretty quiet all day on most days, so I'm hoping the female will entertain him enough to prevent any more tail-biting!

Smurf was a chronic tail biter and the only time he ever stopped was when he shared his tank with another male. Each betta is different though.

Damo, how do you work all your fish now if you don't have divided tanks? I'm curious!

I keep my males in in 10ltr tanks, all seperate, I only have 4 adult males at the moment mind you. But our spare room is my fish room.

Is it more work, less work? I'm looking to get rid of my 6gal divided and had been tossing around the idea of single tanks but they all seem so expensive. Hence all my questions for you! Smile

I don't think they get overly stressed by seeing other males through dividers - I have had Huey a tailbiter in an individual tank and when I moved him into a divided tank (female one side, male the other) he stopped faffing with his tail Smile

almost all my bettas can see each other, I dont get tail biting, but they are pretty all laid back.... I only have one divided and that has got 2 girls in...

It is a little bit more work, but i keep it quite minimal, i have silk plants in the tanks which i can clean quite quick, and for the bottom i use large pebbles instead of gravel, as i find gravel a nightmare when comes to cleaning.

Male + Male would be nicer to look at... But really what I'm concerned about is him stopping tail biting!

I think a male + male might make your betta more active, defending his territory. I'm just guessing though. I recently put a divider in one of my tanks for 2 males and the fish seem very entertained by each other. The swim happily around and then every so often meet each other at the divider and flare.
