Can anyone recommend a heater?

I have tried both a Tetra submersible heater and a Marineland Stealth heater but have issues with both. They're both supposed to keep the tanks set at 78 F. I use glass thermometers in both my tanks which are very accurate. The Tetra heater is usually reliable but sometimes it allows the temp to down to about 74 without turning on. The Stealth heater got my old 5 gallon tank up to 86 at one point, after which I returned it to the store as defective! Now I don't trust Marineland. I would prefer a reliable, safe heater that will keep the tanks around 80 or 82. Does anyone have any suggestions as to brands? I have a 3 gallon tank and a 6 gallon. Thanks in advance!!

I'm not sure what brands you have in the US, but it'd definitely go for an adjustable one this time - the preset ones are unreliable and the preset temperature is usually too cold for bettas anyway.

If you go by price alone the Fluval brand is the most expensive! Maybe read
some reviews on them.

I'm on my way to a lfs in a few minutes to buy a new Marineland filter for 2-6gl. tanks. Will look at
heaters and see if Kristen there. I trust her opinion on equipment and fish issues.

I don't know what heaters you have over there, but deffo adjustable ones are best. The temp the tank reaches will also depend on your room temp... because I hate a hot bedroom I often have to have the tanks set at a degree or 2 higher in winter to maintain the correct temp.

I went to Petsmart ans took a look at heaters. Also looked online at
Petsmarts website at the reviews. The Eheim had the best review but is
not submersible. Topfin has one and had a low rating on the reviews, but
is submersible.

I'd suggest researching and once you've arrived at your two top choices
try Ebay or possibly buy direct from the manufacturer. Sorry I don't have a
solid answer.

Fluval heaters are expensive but i hate mine as i cant put the whole heater in the water, i really dont like it and would change it for a interpet heater any day but not sure if you guys have that brand.
But as everyone else has said id defo go for an adjustable heat one...hope you find one Smile

I just looked it up and it appears to be an excellent heater from the info..
Pet Mountain has a clearance sale on them and its $15.77(46% off) + $6.99
shipping. I may have to get a couple myself. Let me know if you find it cheaper
and I'll do the same.

Thanks! I'll look around. Marineland is a good name -- maybe their adjustable heater is better quality than their fixed temp model.

In my opinion Eheim Jager heaters are the best in the world. The temperature is always 2 degrees higher than you set it, but that just means you set it 2 degrees lower than you would normally. I literally mean always, unless your room temperature is higher than the setting. It has exact degree settings, not just a switch and markers, real numbers. The glass is 2mm thick instead of the usual 1mm thick of most heaters. The only problem you will have is that it might not fit in your tank. The smallest one is the 50w designed for a 15g, but bigger is always better. I have a 75w designed for a 20g in my 10g. They're the only heaters I trust. I think they're made in Germany.

1000l!?!?!?!?!? The old 300w only did 500l. I want to see it before I believe it. It sounds ridiculous. It sounds impossible. How much does it cost?

Thanks for the recommendation! However I looked up the Eheim Jager heater and the smallest size it comes in is 50W for 10-15 gallons. That won't work for me since my tanks are just 3 gallons and 6 gallons. Will probably buy the Marineland model discussed above as soon as I have the money. 'Til then, my Tetra heaters will have to do.

Well I can only go by my personal experience, and that is my tank is in a very chilly, unheated outbuilding. It is about 95-100 uk gallons and has 1 300w Eheim Jager heater in it and the temp does not fluctuate. Cost £30 if I remember correctly. It is do do with the way the coil is made or something.
