African Dwarf Frogs Info?
So, Im thinking of getting an african dwarf frog with a betta, I have a few questions.
1. Do they jump out of the tank?
2. How do you feed them ? as they dont really have good eye sight.
3.Do betta's and ADF's get along?
4. Are they easy to find? I know the diffrence between adf and the clawed version.
And some additional info about care...
And can you guys post some pics of ADF and tank set ups?
Thanks

Re: African Dwarf Frogs Info?
You will need atleast a 5G for a betta and ADF.
1) They shouldn't but there should be a lid anyway because bettas will.
2) Blood worm frozen or live, flake, algae wafers. You will have to use tweezers or a pippet to put it infront of the ADF.
3) Aslong as it is a ADF and not ACF then yeah
4) Most lfs have them or can order them in.
Theres pics of jessies here

Re: African Dwarf Frogs Info?
That should be fine then. Make sure you use sand or large gravel so the ADF can swallow it. If you cant get ADF pygmy corys would work instead.

Re: African Dwarf Frogs Info?
1) I've never had mine try to jump out, but the tank mine are in has a sealed on lid which just has access flaps. I have however heard of ADFs occasionally climbing out via heater cables etc. and rapidly drying out on the floor and dying. Mine have never tried to get out of the water though, they're fully aquatic and don't seem to have any desire to leave the water.
2) They need hand feeding at least every other day with tweezers, as their eyesight is poor and they're not very fast. I feed once a day six days per week, with one day as a fast. They will eat bloodworm, brine shrimp and other frozen foods, as well as all live foods and tropical flake. Frozen foods are best. If you ever go away for a few days, some live daphnia added before you leave will sustain them for a while.
3) Yes, they just ignore each other. If a betta's fin brushes an ADF's face it will try to grab it, but they can't do any damage to the fins and let go straight away when they realise it's not food.
4) Yes, generally, although when you first buy them they will probably be underweight as LFS don't feed them enough or have the time to see that they're fed properly.
Another point I would add is that you should get more than one. I have a pair and they are social - they like to hang around together or rest touching each other, and seeing as the full grown size is only about 2.5cm body length, the bioload is not greatly increased by having two instead of one. I have a male and female but you could have two of the same sex and they'd still enjoy each other's company. They'll probably be too small to tell when you buy them, but generally the females are bigger and rounder, and the males are smaller with a tiny pale round 'spot' in the armpit area.
Mine are in a planted 5gal and are very happy. They also know me and come to the front and surface asking for food when they see me My gravel is the small size 2-3mm stuff, they've never tried to eat any of it!

Re: African Dwarf Frogs Info?
KJ, does the betta interfere with ADF's when your feeding them?
Dont they run away from the tweezers?

Re: African Dwarf Frogs Info?
No, as the ADFs stay on the bottom so you have to dip your hand in the tank while feeding them. They will sometimes come up to mid-water once they're used to you and know the food is coming, but the betta generally stays at the top and stays away from my hand so it's no bother.
He will sometimes try and have a pick at the tweezers as I put them in, as he knows they bring his favourite bloodworms, but I've never found it to be a problem despite him being a greedy feisty VT. If you do find it a problem, I would just feed the betta first so he's busy.

And no, they don't run away as they are pretty blind and just strike at whatever is in front of their face, sometimes they grab the tweezers and try to eat them!

Re: African Dwarf Frogs Info?
ADF's are adorable, they have fab personalities. But don't get just one, they like being in a group so get at least two. I also found mine much preferred sand subtrate as they love to burrow.
My betta always steals food when I feed my ADF's, so I feed him first so he's not too hungry and he leaves the frogs alone.
