Re: Coconut Caves?
Yh its best to boil them for 10 - 20 before you put them in. they could be fine without boiling but its better to be safe than sorry really.

Re: Coconut Caves?
I know!
I used to shave the little hairs off with my knives in the kitchen but they get so blunt...so sometimes i use disposable razors!
(Never got any sand paper at home!)

Haha The worst bit is still trying to scrape the coconut inside out. The ones that the pics are of come out really well but ome i end up scraping it out in 1mm x 1mm squares lol. I just use the grinder where i do my work experiance for the last lot flew through them in seconds lol.

Re: Coconut Caves?
Thought I'd let everyone know that I thought removing the meat would be tedious and maybe just a little bit frustrating. I used a table knife and after the initial start, it just popped out in fair sized chunks. So don't be scared to give it a go!

Re: Coconut Caves?
I check out our zoning laws here and you're not permitted to have a coconut cave/hut without a bonafide resident, Chuckling. So off to a lfs I went for a new crowntail so as not to be fined!

Re: Coconut Caves?
Boiling the cave as I allow the bag temp to meld with the tank temp.

Re: Coconut Caves?
Just a quick note about coconut caves. If one, or all of the little hole plugs come out, I'd remove the cave. We have had two bettas get stuck in them recently, so all with the exposed holes have been removed.

Re: Coconut Caves?
Thanks Vand.! I appreciate everyone looking out for me and my little guys. I'm certainly not beyond mistakes! I didn't drill any vent holes as it sunk on its own. Do I need to worry about water stagnation inside the cave or something?

The water shouldn't go stagnant inside the cave

Re: Coconut Caves?
I used a grinder to smooth out my coconut cave, was really easy. I would recommend protective eyewear, even with my glasses a few pieces got around and hit me in the eyelid.
My coconut does have a tiny hole in it, but my betta is "big boned" so I don't think she has any chance of getting stuck in it but I'll keep an eye out and make sure not to use it with the smaller ones.

Re: Coconut Caves?
The coconut caves at the lfs were just to small so I decided to make my own.
I did mine all by hand except the drain holes. I almost screwed up though.
I used the bigger half for the cave because the coconut I found wasn't karge enough to make two. So I thought I'll just make a playpen for the neons(2) and drill a dozen small holes they fit through. Then I remembered the horror stories I had heard!

Re: Coconut Caves?
LOL...yep best to not have any holes with Bettas about. One of our males recently got his head stuck in the hole at the top of his coconut cave. Luckily I spotted him straight away and was able to gently push him back out.
