Cornish Cobble Substrate?

Seen a giant bag of this for £10 and really like the good, is it good for an aquarium and would it be ok with plants???

I was aiming for dorset pea but the only place know that has it around sold out even though they promised they had loads and just made a special trip! Grrrrr....

What do you guys reckon, quite like the look of pebbles but worried the plants will not take to it, or will most plants grow wherever? THHHANKSS!

Not sure if it would be aqua safe?? It may change the ph and alkalinity levels? Also, i dont believe plants would root very well in it?

hmmmm I was thinking that, what about the pea gravel? As the dorset pea I saw was the same sold in diy and fish?? (Sorry I am always a pain!)

I believe Dorset Pea gravel is safe:) But unsure about what its like for plants? Daz would know:)

The general rule is that if its not labelled as safe for aquatics then dont use it. Its to do with the process of breaking down the material to make it the size they require and some process' could use a chemical that not safe for aquatics. Play sand is too heavy for plants and suffocates roots. Dorset pea is perfect for plants but i find that you need to add additional granule ferts (but dont buy it from maidenhead or SA as their granule ferts turn to sludge and create hard work!! I've had countless people in this past week moaning about this product that they are recommending. I personally like aquagrit which is for plants and designed for plants. Their granules are a weird structure that allows roots systems to grow through them and holding the plant in place. Ive lifted out plants from this substrate in the past and the roots were covered in the stuff. They grow very well in them too. A 2.5kg bag is usually around £6.00 but will do an aquarium base size of about 15" x 12" to about 2" in depth. I can get this but sometime it can become out of stock very quickly at the wholesaler.

Hey Daz thanks for that, we did go with the pea gravel in the end (it was labelled safe for ponds etc, Ive been keeping close eye on the water). That stuff for the plants is it addable once the water is in or turn it all to misty mess? I have currentyl as ferts some pond stick things that you stick in the gravel and seachem flourish. Would a 2.5kg bag do the job? If so yes please, if you can get some or I can try ordering online somewhere (Would it mean I need to delay my order of the plants and guppies with you??)

An ideal ferts with pea gravel is pure laterite I find. We can get this but not for another 3 weeks as weve just had a delivery. It can be added at any time.

Ohhhhh well let me know the prices nearer the time and hope to get some off you as my tanks look very pretty and much better with the live plants and really dont want too many die offs. Thanks for all the help guys! x
