Help setting up new 10 gallon tank Empty Help setting up new 10 gallon tank

Post by beckyhazel Fri 7 Aug 2009 - 17:01

Hey everyone!

I'm just about to set up a 10 gallon tank for my betta, it came with an elite stingray filter and (i think) an Elite heater (i've put it away somewhere and can't find it!), although i've read on the forum that they're a bit dangerous.

Can anyone recommend a heater for the new tank? Also has anyone had any good/bad experiences with the stingray, or would there be a better alternative?

Thanks very much!

stingrays are excellent little filters - i would remove the cartridges though and replace with sponge and floss as the cartridges contain ammonia remover and carbon and cost quite a lot to keep replacing

the carbon is only any good for a couple of days anyway

are you going to cycle the tank before adding him (wait 4 weeks) or are you going to do a fish in cycle ?
if you need some mature sponge to get you started let me know i can send some right size for £2.60 - just to cover postage

You could try the heater but they are known for being unreliable - though i have had mine for over a year and still working fine

I RECOMMEND a visitherm , a sera or interpet heater - never had any probs with these

The heaters above are recommended, though had one of those 3 months and no problems.

The mature media will be the best option!

I ditched my elite heater through fear lol I now have a visi-therm and have noticed it is much better at keeping the temperature constant, the elite would drop a degree or so at night, the visi-therm holds rock solid temps.
though you couold use the elite to fishless cycle till you get the replacement one then swap them over......gives you 4 weeks or so to get one.
Yeah, the filters are good as long as you remove the cartridge and replace with sponge, as pippoodle said. Not much sponge in them otherwise lol

Received hun thanks
When you receive the sponge - DONT rinse it - even if its mucky cos thats what you need just open it over your tank and place the sponge in the filter - dont worry about the dirty water going in the tank it all helps
dont forget if your not adding fish right away you need to either add a bit of fish food or some ammonia to keep feeding the bacteria

Ah ok i'll make sure I do that, i'm going on an ammonia hunt tomorrow - hopefully it won't be too difficult to find some!

I'll post some pics of the tank with Moby in it when it's all set up and cycled - he's going to be a happy boy!
