Emergency Identity Crisis LMAO
Okay a few weeks ago I suspected one of Nettys babies to be male as she's fiesty. I put her in a breeding trap overnight to see if she built a bubblenest well nothing happened and she jumped out back into the main tank so I left her there. All has been fine since until I get home from Daz's to find the blue CT being beaten up by yes you've guessed it the suspected male. I've tried to get some more pics she been put in the breeding net again. Can you please take a look and see what sex you think she is.

The joys of bettas.... I hate when a girl does that but i did read an artical recently about that... not the typical young fish but that an older female can occasionally change sex and father a spawn... but makes it easier to see how the odd rogue male appears late! lol
'Quite often older female Bettas turn up that have gone through sex
reversal. When that happens some of them can actually produce sperm
cells and thus become the father of broods. I'll not attempt to give
the details of how this can happen here but it can, does, and has even
been experimentally induced through surgery. Female to male sex
reversal leads to longer fin growth (in long-finned types at least) and
alterations in behaviors including increased aggression. The solution
here is to break up any fight going on and be sure you have correct
sexes next time you set up a mating.'

Re: Emergency Identity Crisis LMAO
I had this happen to one girl I kept. I'm serious.
Her name was Little Red Riding hood and when I got her she was tiny and definitely a female.
We had her for over three years and after roughly a year and a half she ended up living alone in a 15g tank and lo and behold started growing fins like a male.
Hang on let me hunt for pictures.
Ok when I got her she looked like this, note the clear oviposter and female looking fins
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Then a full year later her fins suddenly started to grow
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
And then another year after that I say 'she' was looking like a pretty impressive male
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
That fish is long gone now, those pics were taken in 2003, 2004 and 2005 but 'she' had a long happy life and was a really interesting fish. I can't see anything having happened here other than a sex change.
