Oldest betta?
A guy at the pet shop a couple days ago told me that he had a friend whose betta lived to be almost 7 years old! I was wondering, what is or was your longest-lived betta?

Re: Oldest betta?
I was surfing the Internet and read some pages where people say the oldest recorded betta was 9 years old. I wonder if that's for real?? Others say their fish live to be 5 or 6 when taken care of well. Yet others say their bettas have only lived to be a year or two. I suppose these estimates depend on how old the fish was when purchased and also what kind of conditions you keep him in. And if you buy an adult betta from a pet store you never know of course how old the fish actually is when you buy him. Interesting stuff.

Genetics as well play a big part I imagine - the "fancy" fish are much weaker than their mongrel friends. That's an amazing age though. I had my oldest for 18 months, he was prob about 5-6 months when I got him

Re: Oldest betta?
I dont see why they couldnt live 9 years if kept well. 5-6 tear seems to be the average old bettas if that makes scene. I suppose it just depends on the fish same as humans some die naturally at 60-70 where as others 100-110 just varies from person to person.

Wow...I was told the average is 2 years, 3 if lucky o.o and that's why my cousin wasn't so aweful upset hearing the one she had died, even though his life was cut short. He was approx. 2 years old when he was poisoned but he was resistant to a variety of water condition, hardy little thing, probably could have lived another 1-2 years if kept right.

Re: Oldest betta?
my very first betta, a VT named Zach, was about four when he finally passed. stupid filter. Dx if it hadn't been for him getting sucked against it one night, he probably would have lived longer!

Re: Oldest betta?
a healthy well taken care of betta will live longer. also bettas that have been home bred may live a little longer as well because the big farms may or may not use growth hormones and such to move fish to market faster.
my longest lived was a home bred guy that was about 3.5 when he died. any store or even other breeder bought fish would generaly live about a year for me, consider that they would have been anywhere from .5 to 1.5 years at that point of me gettign them.

My oldest was a VT, named Spooky. He lived about three years. Sweeney is my current boy. He's a CT, is two and going strong.
