Why oh why oh why do people INSIST on believing that bettas live in teensy dirty puddles, and so therefore we're almost doing them a favour by keeping them in a "perfect" 1us gal pot?!?!?! I'm so frustrated by these people! I'm getting tired of arguing on behalf of the poor fish with people who seem to have their ears full of chewing gum and who want to believe what they're doing is ok.

You know, sometimes I wish I could cram these people into glass coffins and see how they like to spend the rest of their lives in something so small they can't reach round to scratch their butts.

Dont worry.....I had a little argument with someone who's website we came across last week. Apparently, betta live in puddles 3"x2"x2" lol!

Quite where she got those precise measurements from gawd only knows. She also keeps bettas in vases that are about 2" wide and 10" tall that have plants shoved in the top!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Shocked

AND does water changes once a month Shocked

When I was initially getting into betta keeping and was researching as much as I could, it was amazing how many websites offered similar information to those above! Luckily I was a member of a pet forum and some of those had bettas so they were able to start me off on the right track. Now I have you lot! Good for me, bad for you. LOL

someone I know kept a betta in a vase, artificial plants, no lid on the vase. I tried to persuade her otherwise, I did give her some real weed and also some betta pellets a sit had flakes. The thing is this betta lived 4 years!! So when it died she got another one and yes you can guess the rest...

It angers me. Plus I was just told to "get of my high horse" because I disagreed with someone keeping their fish in a 1 US gallon bowl, with not even proper weekly w/c's, let alone each day.

It is frustrating and the problem is that anyone can make a website and encourage this type of fish keeping. The newbie then comes across the site and takes everything as gospel Mad

Wow, I wonder where these poeple come from? I won my first 2 betta in vases, immedeatly I bought bowls not much better but I didn't know, I just could not see keeping the way I got them. Exclamation

I am sooo glad I found you all! I got so mad at the store when the lady who works there told me they lived in dirty mud puddles tantrum

They seem to have the attitude of "well they CAN survive in small spaces"... well they may "survive" but what sort of life is it to live in a tiny container until you die?! Sad

I think fishkeeping is a huuuge learning curve - in the shops we're told a load of rubbish, and then we go on places like this and find out the truth. I'm lucky that my LFS takes good care of their bettas and gives decent advice Smile
