only eating flake Empty only eating flake

Post by kizno1 Thu 25 Feb 2010 - 17:58

my no betta will only eat flake and lives but wont touch pellets. i was trying to feed it hikari bio gold but ive run out now need to order some more but he just refused them and will only take the flake.
i know most people feed bettas pellets but do they actually need pellets or do they just take them better?
will there be a problem with it only eating flake?
thanks
Very Happy

If you can get him onto pellets then it would be better than flake. Have you tried crushing the pellets. If he'll take them crushed then you can gradually reduce how much you crush them until he's taking them whole.

I would persevere with pellet feeding if you can get some more. Maybe offer flake in the morning and crushed pellet in the evening. They do usually take to it after a while and once they are properly settled in.

you could try soaking the pellet in a little garlic juice to make it softer, perhaps the betta does not like the large cruchieness.

Some of my boys are the same. They will only eat pellets, even refuse live foods!

I put in brineshrimp yesterday and a majority of the boys just watched it swim passed!

my fish are the oposite. most of my fish love live frozen and peas but they never get to touch it because the angels eat them before they hit the floor lol.

I can just imagine their little faces...what the devil is that swimming in our tank!!
I have noticed bettas from lfs will just stare at the pellets, I know they will eat flake but mine dont get them. If I am in a hurry mine get complete micro granules for small tropical, they love those, looks like dust!

Have you tried popping some of the crushed pellet in amongst his flakes. If he gets used to the taste that way you might be able to gradually reduce the flake.

What a fussy boy lol You could also try soaking in mashed up bloodworm and see if that works.

You could try Hikari micro pellets and then slowly up the size to the bio gold, they half sink and half float just like a flake would and are already small in size and good for your betta, they are what I use to move my juvie's on and it works pretty well thumbup

yes..yes.. i know those nuddy boys..haha..I will suggest to give him flakes for now and then try the pallets later on.I remember one of my hunny didn't want to eat flakes and only ate peas and daphnia and i knew that those things doesn't have calories so i was worried and gave him a little time and then began giving him flakes, sometimes he spit them out but then he began eating them =) Just give some time Very Happy
