A Mouse?

Have any of you had a pet mouse before? And if so, what was it like and can you tell me some things that you learned from keeping it? Thanks.

stinky and a little crazy. pen needed cleaned more often then hamsters. very adept little buggers at getting lose.

I see. They don't sound to great now! I have had four hamsters in the past and I really did not enjoy having them. I really would like a rat, but I think my mom would much rather have a "cute little mouse" Rolling Eyes

Try and convince her on a rat! Mice are adept at getting out but cute. Rats are gorgeous really intelligent and do really make great pets

if you get the correct cage a mouse wont escape.

i've had a few, admittedly they do stink, but only need cleaning once a week still.

if you get them the specialised cages, either VERY small bars designed for dwarf/russian hamsters/mice you will have any issues.

you can also get mouse cages like the ones Netty uses as tanks for her betta tanks are also good.

what about Gerbil's? theyre very friendly too, and quite intelligent

Yep I've got little buttons my boy mouse. I had him from 7 or 8 weeks old. Females can live in groups but males are best on their own. For this reason they need a big cage with lots of things to explore. Females tend to be great climbers but boys not so much.

My boy's house is a two tier cage which is 72cm long. It's the Marchioro Jack72.

He tends to poop in the one place alot which makes cleaning easy. He actually makes more mess with his food lol which is scattered everywhere. Lovely to handle and loves to have his head rubbed.

I actually have a cage from the hamsters that I used to have. I just thought it wouldn't work because of the bars, but seeing yours has bars like it, it might work...Here's the link to the exact cage that I have~ (On the list that comes up it is the second cage: The Critter Trail 2 or something like that...)

The reason I got mine so big is because I joined a mouse forum to find out and that's what everyone recommended. Another make is Savic. Apparently the bars on those are very small too. The gap should be under 1cm. I checked out alot of cages that had the narrow gap but were very easy to bend which a little mouse could squeeze through quite easily. Personally I would go for something bigger that has more floor space and just a bit extra height for hanging things onto.

Okay. I still don't know if I will actually get anything, but I am kind of interested. I really really really like the idea of getting a pair of female rats, but the fact that they need to go to the vet is kind of scaring me at the moment...And could you tell me which forum you joined?

LOL....rats are cute too. I had a couple of girls years ago when my son was little....but boy did they make a noise on their wheel everynight. Mind you mouse's wheel squeaks like mad when he's running....I blamed it on the hoggies for weeks now but caught him in the act at the weekend lol

I think mice are little dolls but the risk of them getting out just freaks me out! One of my hamsters escaped once and I searched everywhere for him--even set safe live traps!--but he was missing for days. I finally found him scuttling around under my bed (where I had already looked!). But he didn't actually get out. I trusted him so much that I left the door open on his cage while I was doing something Smile

That was one of things I was worried about too cos mine was just a tiny baby. He's never managed to get out of this cage and now he's grown more I think it's unlikely he every will. Unless like you I leave the door open lol

I think Savic are the make that have all the gaps less than 1cm. They have quite a nice range of cages and it's worth looking on ebay for a bargain.

Ok I will do that. I just hope if I do get some mice I will have a better experience with them than those darn hamsters Mad

Some examples of my hard times with them would be:
1. Junior (first hamster) getting out
2. Ralphie (a friend for Junior) eating Junior's face off
3. Cricket becoming epileptic (seriously!) after only having her for a year
4. Zoey (Cricket's sister) somehow developing a rare hamster form of mental retardation (not even kidding you)...oh what a great few years I had Smile

I think Hamsters can be like that though. My friends daughter had two and both died within a week or two. Ours lived for 2 years then had a brain haemorrhage of some sort and had to be put to sleep.

There's so much info on the internet these days and forums. Just decide what you'd like and then research so you get everthing just right. I'm sure then things will go alot smoother

Yep...we have a friend who breeds them. My little one was just 3 weeks old at the time and just couldn't resist him.
