Betta and cory's
I've finally cycled my 10 gallon tank for my betta! I wanted to get some cories to put in there too. How many can I have in a 10 gallon with a betta?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Betta and cory's
Cories need to be kept in groups as they are a shoaling fish and need more bottom surface space. I've got 4 albinos in a 15 gal and they are really active, much more than other types I've had in the past. It might be best in a 10gal to go for pygmy cories though, then you could have more of them to make a nice group. Also panda cories don't get quite as big as some other but can be a little more sensitive.
But also you'll need to wait a while before adding them as they need to go into an established tank.

Yeah I was looking at pygmy cories but no where in my area seems to do them. I can get them mail ordered but it would set me back about £30 for 6!

I asked if they'd be getting any in and they said to keep checking back as their supplier doesn't often have them

Re: Betta and cory's
Well as I said I was going to get the pygmy cory's but as they're so hard to get hold of i'm happy with normal cory's, as long as they're not too big for the tank/my betta!

Re: Betta and cory's
I wouldn't have 8 in a 10 gallon, tbh. They get to between 2.5 and 3 inches, depending on species, and that's a lot of fish for a 10 gallon, and they do like the space.
In a 10 gallon I'd have 4 or 5 max. Keep them all the same species for them to shoal best.

Re: Betta and cory's
i would get atleast 6
6*2.5 = 15" and then the betta thats still under 2" per gallon but you just need to leave the tank about 6 months before adding then and add 3 then another 3.

Re: Betta and cory's
To be honest, I wouldn't have any more than 4 regular corys in a 10g. Its not really to do with the tank volume, its more down to the footprint size of the tank when considering bottom dwellers and feeders.
The other consideration for corys, is that they are not best suited for new set-ups.

Re: Betta and cory's
I'm quite happy just having a few cory's to be honest. But it seems i'll have to leave it a while before I get them. It's proving to be very difficult finding tank mates for my betta!

Re: Betta and cory's
I would class Oto's as I have with Corys, not for a new setup. They will die quite quickly unfortunately:(
Kuhli loaches are an option:) We have two in with our females and they have been fine

Re: Betta and cory's
you also have to think about what could happen if your betta does not want tank mates. I have had some males/females perfectly fine with them, then had a male atempt to rip full grown albinos apart as soon as he was aclamated to the tank. could you return or rehome them is you had to?

Re: Betta and cory's
OP, my local Maidenhead Aquatics has just let me know that they have a huge number of c. Hastatus in stock - I've been waiting for these to come in as they (as far as I know) are the tiniest corys you can get, and I want to give my boy some company.
If you are still interested in corys then perhaps your local MA would be able to get some as well? I think the chap said they were only something like £1 each if you buy 6!

pygameus corys are the smallest ones quite a bit smaller than hastatus and hasbrosus even though all 3 are classed as pygmy corys

Hmm - been misinformed then. I'd better carefully check what I'm getting. Thanks Pip for the info.
