First day nerves??? Empty First day nerves???

Post by jennybugs Sun 20 Sep 2009 - 16:28

I have just been up to see Shasu my new grizzle HM, only to find him wedged underneath a moss ball. I took the moss ball out and he hid under the filter. I moved the filter and he hid in the roots of the anubias. I left him be when he was swimming about for a bit and left the room. He ate a few blood worms and when I came back he'd hidden himself (before he saw me) yet again in a most uncomfortable looking position around the heater.

The other HM Shiro is as bold as brass!

Is this normal? I have never had quite such a nervous fellow before and want to do best by him. Am I worrying a bit too early?

I am leaving him in peace and quiet and am hoping with time he'll get used to me being about.

I hope I'm just being a silly nervous new mommy

Hey, I think its just him getting used to the tank he may be a little scared and hiding is his way of settling in, im sure its nothing to worry about but just keep an eye on him :D

Also if your tank has lights and there on turn them off, on the first day of getting a new fish aquarium lights should be switched off.

I have just turned the lights off again after having them on for a little while. I have removed the moss balls and a plant so hopefully if I leave him be he'll settle. Shiro is absolutely fine and swims up to the front of the tankwhen I go in the kitcfhen...the show off :D

Thanks for the comments. I feel like a complete novice again after all these years!

I would of left the moss balls and the plant in, as there going to be in his home so he may aswellg et used to them, also more plants and those moss balls will help as he can hide behind them.

I might just try that when I have the use of both hands back. I had an op on my left thumb to have a new joint put in and it's in a big splint with instructions not to use it at the mo Sad

It scared me when I found him behind the filter!
He can't get there now as I blocked it up. Hopefully he'll settle in ok.

Water stats are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, nitrate 0 and ph 7.2. Temp 28.

Stats are looking good hon, you will find them squeezed into the oddest places. I had a heart attack with Enigma when he had buried himself sideways under a moss ball and I was sure he was dead! It turned out he had figured where I had put the loach food Smile

I've never had any of my many other bettas doing stuff like this to be honest hun. Quite an eye opener I must say.

Glad to report he's been sitting at the front of his tank this morning looking at me looking at him. He only bolted when I got a bit too close, so no piccies yet I'm afraid. Shiro won't be a problem though as he mostly swims to me

Thats good to hear! Some bettas take longer to settle in than others, there just like people some can like a new house straight away other people take time lol! [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Shasu is as happy as Larry now (whoever he is) and swimming and eating in a most leisurely fashion :D

I have his light angled so part of the tank is in shade and part is lit so it gives him a calm and tranquil atmosphere.

Hoping to get a snail or two and try some of my large amano shrimp in with him and Shiro soon. At least with 9 tanks I have plenty of backup tanks if they take offence lol!
