This Is Terrible!
Ok so what I gathered from this YouTube vid I watched was that this dude fights his bettas...He says something like, "Oh this one was fighting with this one, so his fins are all ripped up..." Then he chuckles! All of the bettas he showed had ripped fins which made me think that he probably fights his bettas...Here is the vid...Correct me if I am wrong-

Horrible, pathetic man.
Trapping two aggressive animals in a tiny compartment and giving them no room to move or flee is sick and cruel. It's not natural, it's not cool, it's not fair.

Re: This Is Terrible!
Not that I am defending him as I wouldnt want to fight bettas myself but in thailand betta fighting is very much a sport, people bet on their fish and prize the most aggressive, this is why domestic bettas that we now keep are aggressive to one another - from selective breeding - of course in Thailand it is normally the short tailed plakats that are used for fighting so it might be that this guy is simply being cruel, but it is important to be aware of cultural differences of what is acceptable

There was an incident of that where I live. 2 chaps were buying 20 odd bettas at same time. When questioned they said they were going to breed them, but they only ever bought solid blues and reds and no females. Thankfully they have now disappeared.

Re: This Is Terrible!
Yes but the guy's profile says he is from the US. He's a 23 year old from the US. I can understand that we owe modern betta to the fighting but we also owe things like bulldogs to fighting and brutal pasts. It doesn't make it right even if it's part of their "culture" you don't see us americans still fighting american bulldogs (well not legally.) and why? because it's wrong! It's a bloodsport, just as much as cockfighting, bullfighting, hog baiting, or dog fighting. I don't care if they "prize" their most agressive fish, you can tell if they had any sense at all that they would "prize" them enough to not force them to fight to save their life and willingly injure them. :\ I don't see your point at all sadly.

Wilson - i wouldnt' have said anything if the guy had been using plakats and come from thailand as it is part of the tradition - but this guy is from US using long finned males
Good on you hun for pointing that out always worth others remembering about the cultural differences

Also, on another note here, just because it's part of a tradition doesn't make it right. The mayan's killed thousands to offer to their gods, but that doesn't by any means justify their deaths. Even if it was a voluntary action on the part of the person, do you get the point I'm trying to make?
