more chickens!
its summer in pa and that means fairs. as we where walking down the chicken coop rows I realised that all the eggs that the hens where laying the 4h kids where just piling up and chucking. I then asked for a few. a snotty teenager then told me that they wouldnt be fertile because you "should" take the roos away from the hens for a few weeks so the hens feathers will be perfect. 1 most people do not have several chicken coops and 2 as long as you have a large enough coop and run and proper roo to hen ratios then one hen over the others wont get beaten up. so anyways I took home a handfull of eggs and made an incubator and we waited....
two are fertile and growing peeps woohoo. and then...one of tims friends gives him three two day old peeps. two ameraucanas and one plymouth rock. we have seven orpington hens that will be laying in about 1.5-2 months. the little guys will have to stay in their brooder box for a while because the other hens are so big.
but anyways it was a great cheap way to get a few more chickens without paying the huge hatchery prices and getting 25-50 birds at a shot.

sorry to be so late with the pictures, the young horse must have found a new patch of clover in the pasture and pigged out and gave herself gas colic. azul was so kind to come home early from work to help me with her.

I dont think that the black chick really liked the flash. chicks raised at the same time tend to stick together and be friends, no matter the color. chicks (particulary hens) raised even 1-2 months apart even as adults dont tend to become buddies, though a lone rooster will pick favorite hens and watch over them most carefully.
